A window is more than its profile. It is an assembly in which the profile, glazing, hardware, seals and installation must work together.
The profile
The profile forms the window frame and sash. Its material, construction depth, structure and sealing system affect the assembly's stability and insulation.
The glazing
Glazing occupies most of a window's area. The number of panes, their thickness and spacing, and the use of Low-E or solar control glass affect thermal performance and indoor comfort.
The hardware
Hardware enables the window to open, close and lock. The choice of hardware depends on the sash dimensions and weight, opening type and frequency of use.
Correctly adjusted hardware helps the window close evenly and maintain its seal.
The installation
Even a well-configured system can lose performance if not secured and sealed correctly. Installation must suit the building type and actual site conditions.
What do Uf, Ug and Uw mean?
Uf indicates the thermal performance of the profile;
Ug indicates the thermal performance of the glazing;
Uw indicates the performance of the complete window.
For these values, a lower number means better thermal insulation. When comparing two solutions, Uw is the most relevant value because it covers the window as a whole.
Sound insulation is assessed separately and depends largely on glazing configuration, sealing and installation.
